In celebration of Earth Day, Allegany County Government’s Recycling Office has scheduled a special event on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in Constitution Park – Pavilion 1 (between the amphitheater and the playground), Cumberland.
Free compost workshops will be offered at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. by Athena Lee Bradley, Northeast Recycling Council, Inc. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend. Ms. Bradley will also be available from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to answer your composting questions.
In addition, Allegany County residents who wish to do so may purchase a compost bin, The Earth Machine, now at https://squareup.com/store/allegany-county-recycling. Each bin costs $20.56. There are 60 bins available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pre-purchased bins need to be picked-up on April 21 at Constitution Park – Pavilion 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If all 60 bins are not pre-sold, the remaining ones will be available for purchase the day of the event. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.
Composting is environmentally friendly and beneficial. Composting converts yard trimmings, food scraps, and other organics into a valuable soil amendment. The use of compost on lawns and plants decreases the need for fertilizer, pesticides, and other soil amendments.
Allegany County Government appreciates the effort of all recyclers and encourages individuals, businesses, and other entities to practice source reduction and recycling in all activities. Please reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost!
