The Allegany County Department of Public Works Utilities Division has scheduled fire hydrant flushing in July.
Fire hydrant flushing is a maintenance process where hydrants are turned on to allow water to flow for several minutes. Fire hydrant flushing helps keep the interior of the pipes clean, helps maintain excellent water quality, and ensures that fire hydrants are operating properly for fire-fighting emergencies.
Allegany County residents may experience some water discoloration during the flushing process. This discoloration does not affect the quality or the safety of the water according to Mark W. Yoder, P.E., Utilities Division Chief. If water discoloration occurs, residents are advised to turn on all interior and exterior water faucets. After one or two minutes the water should be clear and ready for use.
The Utilities Division personnel will wear Allegany County identified safety vests during this work. Questions may be directed to the Allegany County Department of Public Works - Utilities Division - Bowling Green Field Office, 301-729-3311, Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
