Fascinating History, Fun Experiences, and Natural Beauty Featured as Its Notable Charms

JANUARY 30, 2019 - CUMBERLAND, MD – Cumberland was recently selected by Travel Channel as one of 50 of the Most Charming Small Towns in America, due to its fascinating history, fun experiences and natural beauty.

Known as the “Gateway to the West,” Cumberland played a vital role in the development of the country due to its connection points for the C&O Canal, Western Maryland Railway and the National Road, which all had a beginning, ending or stopping point right in the heart of the city. Today, nature lovers and history buffs can enjoy the rich history of Cumberland by cycling on its internationally recognized system of bike trails, the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath; riding the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad heritage train; or driving the Historic National Road scenic byway. For a fully immersive experience, visitors can book the GAP Trail Connection Excursion, on which they board the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland with their bike, ride to Frostburg on the train, and cycle back to Cumberland along the Great Allegheny Passage.

Featuring state-designated Arts and Entertainment and Main Street districts, Cumberland is alive in cultural experiences and also offers ample shopping, antiquing, and dining. The town, which has a population of 20,000, also boasts some of the region’s most impressive displays of mid-19th- to early 20th-century architecture. Visitors can explore Cumberland’s history at several museums located within the city, including the Allegany Museum, which will have a brand new National Road exhibit opening in Spring 2019, and the C&O Canal National Historical Park and Allegany County Visitors Center Museum, which features interactive and educational displays about the C&O Canal and Cumberland and includes a model of the Paw Paw Tunnel and a life-size section of a canal boat.
