Grants Secured for New Projects

Outdoor Recreation

Allegany County will have a new outdoor recreation facility in the near future.  Phase I funding of our four phase project has been approved for funding from the Maryland DNR Land & Water Conservation Fund to begin creating the Willowbrook Outdoor Wellness (WOW) Spot.  This will project will transform 23 acres of unused land near Allegany College of Maryland into a multigenerational outdoor wellness location.  Phase I includes the creation of (4) football/soccer fields, an ADA Outdoor Kinetics Equipment Area, a walking path, and outdoor educational classrooms.  Stay tuned for more exciting developments as they occur at the Allegany County WOW Spot.

Incubator Space

Funding is coming in for the creation of Western MD Works, our county's MakerSpace community.  The USDA Rural Business Development Grant was awarded to Allegany County to create four incubator spaces at the WMW facility.  Allegany County intends to offer four (4) incubator units to house small, growing companies who wish to utilize shared office, clerical, and meeting room space.  These incubator spaces will encourage entrepreneurship and growth in Allegany County as new businesses develop and grow through this innovative approach to providing office space and access to machinery and tools to help them along the way.

Transportation to Work

North Branch Industrial Park (NBIP) is home to several large employers including Hunter Douglas, Berry Plastics, Webstaurant, and Schroeder Industries.  These businesses are always looking for motivated workers, but one barrier to employment is having a way to get to work.  Good news, Allegany County Transit will be initiating a pilot project which entails expanding Demand Response services to offer transportation to NBIP for all shifts thanks to the Job Access Reverse Commute Grant awarded from the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Broadband Expansion

Allegany County has been notified that we will be receiving funding for Broadband Expansion for Rural Areas funding from the Maryland Office of Rural Broadband. Funding is being provided to expand the broadband service area in Ellerslie and Flintstone.

Event Recycling

Think about recycling! Allegany County was awarded a grant from Keep America Beautiful for 50 recycling bins. These are small bins that can be used at your next event or activity. To coordinate obtaining use of these bins, please contact Siera Wigfield at 301-876-9563 or via email at swigfield@alleganygov.org.
