October 7, 2021 - CUMBERLAND, MD - The 2021 Mountain Maryland Photo Contest closes at the end of this month on October 31, 2021. For the fourth year in a row, Allegany County Tourism has invited visitors and community members to celebrate our region’s story by capturing and submitting photos in the four categories that reflect Allegany County’s destination pillars - Arts and Culture, History and Heritage, Scenic Landscapes, and Outdoor Recreation. As the deadline approaches, the fall season lends a brilliant canvas, especially for outdoor photography. Qualifying photo submissions will be eligible for $1,700 in cash prizes between the four categories.
The photos will be judged by a panel composed of regional leading professionals in marketing, photography, design, and the arts. This year’s selected panel is as follows: Michael Thompson, photographer; Penny Knobel-Besa, playwright, director, producer, and photographer; M. Kendall Ludwig, president and principal designer of CurlyRed; Martin Heavner, photographer; and Chris Sloan, artist and designer. Full biographies and accomplishments can be found on tourism’s website.
New this year, Allegany County Tourism will partner with the Allegany Arts Council to host a closing reception to display the winning photos of the contest and promote the beautiful assets of Mountain Maryland through photography on February 5, 2022, in the Allegany Arts Council’s Schwab Gallery. The show will hang in the gallery throughout the month of February.
“We wanted to find a way to bring together the photographers, panel of judges, the community, and visitors to celebrate the visual representation of some of Mountain Maryland’s greatest assets,” says Jessica Palumbo, Marketing and Sales Manager for Allegany County Tourism. “The Arts Council was receptive to the idea, and we are happy to form a partnership in the process of honoring the photographers and their work.”
Cash prizes will be awarded in each category, with first place receiving $225, second place receiving $125, and third place receiving $75. In addition to hanging in the Schwab Gallery, winning photos will also appear in the annual publication, Visit Mountain Maryland, Allegany County’s official Destination Guide. Photo submissions may appear in the destination guide, on Allegany County’s Tourism website, mdmountainside.com, or on social media.
Only photos taken in Allegany County, MD, will be eligible for the contest. Photos must be high-resolution, with a minimum of 300 dpi. Collages, composite images, images that have been digitally transformed with special effects, images containing watermarks, and black and white images will be disqualified.
Submissions will be accepted until the deadline of Thursday, October 31, 2021, at 11:59 PM. Photographers may submit an unlimited number of images in each category throughout the contest time frame.
